The Beauty of Science

The beauty of science is that it does not belong to any one person or group. Anyone can participate in the process. Darwin’s theory concerning evolution doesn’t “belong” to him. Indeed, he gave us a direction to explore, a direction that had not been explored before, and since him many, many pioneers have journeyed into new territories of knowledge. Those who remain stuck on criticizing evolution by statements made by Darwin or his contemporaries deny themselves the true beauty and power of science. Instead of tearing apart the past you should focus on furthering our understanding by adding new knowledge. Together we can move forward, learning more, and enriching humanity at large with new knowledge.

Amen! :-)

Science is one of, if not the, best tool we have for obtaining reliable knowledge of our world. It's a pity that many overly religious people treat it as a competitor to their religion. I'll admit that I myself (I'm atheist, BTW) see a number of incompatibilities between the two, but conflict can be minimized if they are simply kept apart, rather than in competition. This means, of course, that one should not rely upon holy writings as any sort of science guide.

Ironically though, there is some support for evolution in the bible. Genesis 1:11 states: "And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree." Gen. 1:24 says: "And God said, Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth after his kind: and it was so." In both passages, god does not create the plants & animals directly, but lets "the earth bring [them] forth." Hmmm....

Interesting semantics, but I'd like to look at the original early Hebrew where word meanings were often failry precise. Know anywhere where this is discussed in that context? TO me this seems loose, at best, but so much of what people claim the bible says is based upon this kind of logic. X is vaugley supported by my intrepetation of verse Y.

Once the universe become comprehensible to humans, and then science and its functions and laws can be repeated, understood and taught, there is no need for a religious view of it. The more we uncover mysteries and also hidden marvels in the universe, the less there is for an invisible hand that shaped it all.

But one question that will forever haunt us, what or where are the universe in/ at?
